I love Catarina Maura but I am sad to say that this book just did not work for me. I am not sure why.
Maybe it’s because two grown adults are sneaking around because she doesn’t want her brother/his best friend to find out they are messing around. That whole premise seem juvenile to me.
Plus her initial pining after her best friend who is not into her. I don’t get that either.
Ultimately I found the story to be dull and I longed for it to end

I really wanted to like this book and I don’t think there is one of hers I haven’t liked but this one unfortunately didn’t do it for me. It honestly felt like it dragged on while also being super long at the same thing?! it made no sense?
The preface was all smut focused which i never like a lot of so it made sense that i didn’t really enjoy it
The dialogue didn’t feel as real, or engaging like her dialogue normally is, if anything it felt more forced.
It did pick up towards the end and it was really good and heartbreaking but eventually it fell flat.

I cried so much but it was so worth it it was so good
That angst was just… I need to recover from the heartbreak and then the reassembling of the pieces into a bigger, prettier version of a heart.

I love Catharina Maura. Her characters are complex with deep connections to the other characters in her novels. This one is no exception. Beautiful story about love and loss while navigating impossible interpersonal dynamics when the past comes back to the present.
