The synopsis for this book was so intriguing, and I was really hoping that I’d get swept up in a friendship-across-the-years story. Instead this felt really disjointed. I didn’t feel like I was experiencing the friendships - it was more like three separate stories of three women who were randomly in and out of each others lives. It also felt like there were a lot of Big Points being made, so it felt really heavy. The ending was a little strange and confusing - definitely more of an experimental contemporary novel than I was up for (maybe just not the right book for me).

Couldn't get into it. Lots of telling, not showing.

This book was a ride. It's roughly told in 3 sections with a little bit of epilogue and each one hit differently.

Section 1: I nearly opted to DNF. I found Giselle obnoxiously self centered and overly dramatic and the narrator of the audio book adopted a weirdly stitled, hesitant style for nearly every sentence.

Section 2: I found Jackie a more relatable narrator, though the descriptions of the tech world and the timeline got a bit jumbled for me in places. The weirdly stilted and hesitant style was less pronounced here, which helped.

Section 3: Ellen was my favorite narrator, and the state of the imagined future horrifyingly possible. I was a little unclear on some details at the end of her story, but I wish the whole book had followed Ellen. I wanted more exploration of some of the questions raised here about legacy, continuity, and advocacy.

Epilogue: I'm not sure exactly what point the author was going for here...humanity will always survive? You can have a legacy?

Parts of the book felt heavy handed (the author's repeated instance that Giselle, and Jackie, and Ellen had an amazing bond, were such good friends who could easily pick up and feel connected...I know this can be true, have experienced it, and yet still wasn't entirely convinced this was true for these women. Or maybe I just expected it to have a narrative function beyond the structure of the story and it really...didn't. I kept expecting things to come together or make a statement and instead it felt like the story would walk up to a possible point and then just...stop.
