“There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights, the light of all lights.”

I think everyone knows the basics of Dracula.

We all know Dracula is a vampire who lives in a big castle in Transylvania. Doesn't like garlic, no reflection, must first be invited into your home, drinks blood, can turn others into vampires. Even if you've never read the story, you pick up the general gist from references in pop culture and adaptations.

That's how it was for me. I grew up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I watched Supernatural, Interview with a Vampire and I've seen all three Hotel Transylvania movies - but I had never read Dracula. Until now.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I knew more about the story than I thought I did, but I had no idea it was written in the format of journal entries.

I loved the beginning - the gothic atmosphere and witnessing Jonathan Harker slowly realise his predicament. Watching him try to reconcile the things that he's seen with what he believes as a rational man was excellent, and I really liked his character.

Jumping from the intensity of these scenes to a correspondence regarding three proposals and an impending marriage was a little jarring, but ultimately worth it as you gain an understanding of integral characters you have yet to meet.

I think seeing what happened to Lucy was so interesting but, also, so important because it gives you clues and a greater understanding of what is happening, and what could ultimately happen, to Mina later in the story.

Yep, like everyone in the damn book - I loved Mina.

Actually, I think what I really love about this story was the love and respect all the characters seemed to have for each other. Considering the dark atmosphere and the awful things happening, it was unexpected but I enjoyed it.

I didn't like how the female characters were treated as fragile at times, unable to cope however, I also have to remember to take into account the time in which this was written - I was pleasantly surprised to see the women make deductions and calculations of their own which further progressed the story.

As already expressed, I liked Jonathan Harker. I also liked Arthur Godlaming, John Seward and Quincey Morris. I liked that they showed genuine emotion throughout the story. There was no petty drama - just love and respect and a willingness to be open with one another.

Van Helsing showed this a lot as well, and I did like his character - but man that dude can talk! I swear at one point he explained something over 1-2 pages, which Mina then covered in a paragraph - like, why didn't you just say that in the first place??

Bram Stoker does have a habit of repeating himself but I honestly didn't mind all that much.
Also, for a book titled Dracula, you don't get to see all that much of him, but when you do - those scenes really stand out.

I enjoyed this classic, and I can see what so many have reimagined Dracula as into their own versions. Well worth the read, although challenging at times.

A bunch of friends who really care for each other keep diaries and some bad stuff happens but mostly it's a loving chosen family adoring each other.
