almond is written beautifully through the pov of a boy, yunjae, with alexithymia, where he struggles to understand emotions across his young life that has been characterised with loss and complex friendships. it was heartening to see yunjae discover connection through the people who have refused to give up on him in one way or another.

i loved how this read beautifully captures the nuances of how society perceives and treats those who are different, especially through yunjae's struggles with emotions and the expectations placed on him. was especially touched by the friendship between yunjae and gon - where gon, despite his own background and trauma, became the bridging person for yunjae to experience emotions beyond cause-and-effect arrows and logic. their bond is both heartbreaking and hopeful.

What a curious, thoughtful and well-executed story. I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. It was such a quick read too. I enjoyed it very much!
