This is a great manga if you just want some fun action and amazing art. The story isn’t deep at all, and it’s very episodic so there isn’t much through-line. It isn’t stilted, but there isn’t much to hold on to. I think the idea is that you eventually get to know all of the crew members pretty deeply, which is nice, and we do get some of that in this volume. The trouble is, I have very little stake in these characters and none of them get significant development beyond baseline character traits, except for Vanabelle, who really ought to be the main character. Mika isn’t an interesting character at all, but he is a badass and his character design is cool. So if that’s what you’re looking for, this is the right manga for you!

Two stars for the great art and design. But man, I just don’t need or want a pro whaling story with a steam punk Miyazaki veneer.

This is purely a me thing in the fact that I didn't enjoy this. It's well written, the story is interesting, the crew is sweet, and the art is amazing. But it wasn't for me. As a vegetarian I was actually physically ill reading about how much these characters love dragon meat. It wasn't for me.
