I adored this book; then I read the author’s essay at the end, and now I wish I could assign an extra star. I hope everyone reads this book for too many reasons to mention.

I just want to thank the groups of hate-mongers and soccer moms who got this book challeneged and banned in libraries for so long.  Would never have found this little gem about self-discovery without you ;D

Most of the banned books I've read have been serious bummers (don't worry, this one definitely is too) but this one gives me some hope.  A great, if obvious, lesson is taught, but it's in such a grounded and modern setting.

The characters all have lessons to teach because their flaws are exaggerated.  It's kind of to a cartoonish extent, but they're well-balanced because those flaws come from very real-world perceptions, and are put right in the path of the main character as he goes through the same life class we all do starting in our 20s (if we're lucky):  finding a place to belong, when the world really doesn't want you to be seen.

Cute. Entertaining narrator.

3.5 stars. I have no memory of how this one came on my radar. But I liked it. There are not enough books about people in low-paying jobs and modest ambitions just trying to live life.

I really enjoyed this book and what the author was trying to do w the story. It was an interesting read and although the happy ending felt a bit rushed in my opinion, I shed some happy tears for old Mike.

Fun story, if slightly predictable in certain places it made up for in others. Felt like I knew certain characters in my own life. Happy to have read it.
