goddamn I'd be lying if this book didn't make me sob every second of the way.
It's a beautifully painful story of being gay in the 70s, at a time where it was a criminal offence and treated with horrible medical procedures. It also highlights the extreme racism against Native Americans at the time.

Reading this in 2023, with the current political climate surrounding both queer people and BIPOC made me realise that times never change, people's beliefs never change. That was the most chilling realisation. History is just repeating itself over and over.

The actual story between Johnathan and Web was beautiful, their love being so pure while the world hated it. The book was written so well and I couldn't put it down.

i spent a majority of this book holding back tears. this is the 1st queer story ive read that takes place in st louis. the book focuses on queerness in the 70s specifically about homosexuality being considered a mental illness. one of the main characters is two-spirit and the story talks about this and indigenous tribes in the midwest including what was being fought for on reservations during that time period, specifically what happened at Wounded Knee. i felt very connected to the characters and, in the ending author’s note, learned that James Brandon is also from the st louis area and was raised in a catholic household. its so rare to find queer stories that take place outside of the big city trifecta: nyc, la, and chicago. This book felt very special and personal.

God, I cried so much while reading this.
I rarely give books 5★ but here's why this one got them without second thought:
When I tell you the writing in this is BEAUTIFUL. You really get lost in it.
The story itself is pretty much like any coming of age story, except it rips your heart out.
There are so many real and beautiful quotes in here.
It's not only amazing to read but also very educational and reflective.
Exactly my type of book and I neeeeed everyone to read this. Now.

Edit: not a 5 star read for me anymore, since I loved it while reading and still do, but I just don't think about it anymore. 5 star books stay with me, this one didn't as much.

Wypłakałam morze łez czytając.
Polecam bardziej audiobook niż książkę, gdyż dość ciężko się ją czyta przez zmiany w czcionce, masę dialogów itd.
Piękna książka, bardzo polecam.
