I really liked this book, it added a new token of diversity to my alphabet mafia books and gave me a better perspective on what it was like being LGBTQ+ in the 1950s. I really liked the characters and the different pieces of history that were littered throughout the book.
This book hurt a lot. So no one talk to me while I process it all and think about why my friends give me heartwrenching books to read.
BUT NO, FOR REAL THIS BOOK WAS SO AMAZING AND IMPORTANT?!!? Everyone go read it now and then discuss it with me cause damn.
Please tell me we're getting a sequel, I need a sequel.

Once you get used to the writing style this book is pretty decent but the narration is something else. It has a lot of ... random ... pauses and a lot of random caps and seeing the main charater say whambamthankyoumam after every other sentence was a lot and it got annoying really really fast.
Other than that the story is pretty different - we have the main character Jonathan who is 17 years old and gay. And it's put in 1970's setting when it was considered a mental illness so he ends up going through the treatments that were supposed to cure him - and man was that hard to watch and especially the after effects of those treatments. It was just s hard to read but luckily by the end the doctors realize that it's not a disease you can cure and that LGBTQ+ people don't need treatment because they don't need to be fixed because there is nothing wrong with them. It's also about letting go of certain people since by the end of the book Jonathan's father still refuses to accept him for who he is and insists that he needs to get further treatments so he can be cured and a real man.
There is also a Native American love interest which was great to see and the book also shows how opressed they were considering that a lot of white people thought that they were worth less compared to them.
It's a pretty good book but you have to get used to the writing style.

“At some point you have to stop and say, ‘Enough. This is me.’ And fight for it as hard as you can. Get it?”
