Really hard to get through with the racism misogyny homophobia violence. I see other reviewers writing it off as “of the times” but talented authors manage to write about the 1970’s in the south without being so graphic. Won’t be reading any more from this author

This book was a little disappointing to me. Karin Slaughter is one of my favourite thriller writers. Her characters are usually so complex, and the plots are usually filled with twists and turns. This one fell a little short for me. The characters are all filled with emotional baggage, but I don't think they're as complex and developed as I'd like. The plot was slightly predictable. The sexism, racism, discrimination, and homophobia were difficult to read, but that's a true reflection of 1970s Deep South.

Not an enjoyable book - violently graphic. Depiction of woman joining police force in Atlanta and the misogenists in the force . Plot contrived when thinking about book once finished

Interesting story about a cop killer running through Atlanta. I thought that the two main characters were great. It was nothing like I had read before and I will continue to read Karin Slaughter as she does a great job hooking and keeping you hooked in a novel.

This book was a bit rough for me.  It’s about two women cops in the ‘80s, dealing with the extremely hostile work environment and trying to solve a string of cop murders that have been occurring. One of the lady cop’s brother’s (also a cop) ends up going missing and becoming a suspect after his partner is the latest victim. The main gripe I had was the constant barrage of extremely violent and hateful speech that got casually slung around by basically all of the characters. It was very unpleasant, however realistic it was for the time. I also wasn’t really engaged in the story at all until the last third where it got a bit more interesting in terms of the resolution of the mystery, etc. Not a fan overall.

I know many British people will think that the 70s intolerance only happened in America. I'm old enough to remember it in the UK. There has been progress, still too much is only skin deep.
About the book- breathless read with complex characters.
