I am reminded every time I read a book by Curtis Sittenfeld that she is one of my favorite authors. She has a way of making you fall in love with the characters so much so that they stick in your head for days or even weeks.
I must admit that I probably wouldn’t have read this book if it were written by a different author, since it’s based loosely on the life of Laura Bush(and I‘ve never been a fan of the Bushes). I assure you that it is not political. The tragedy that happens in the beginning of the book is, in my opinion, the worst thing that could happen to someone. I HIGHLY recommend this book or any book by Sittenfeld. Prep is probably my favorite stand-alone book ever.

I liked the first 150 pages or so, bud from the moment she met Charlie Blackwell/George Bush it went more and more annoying... I didn't manage to finish it.

Curtis Sittenfeld is a phenomenal writer. She has the most incredible ability to write characters so believable that even when you disagree with their course of action, you can’t help but root for them out of a basic recognition of them as complex human beings. This was a great novel. Each chapter in Alice’s story clearly defined and so cleverly woven together. Not once did it feel like I was reading something just so that it could pay off later (it did however pay off later). Despite being a longer book, each part of the story felt necessary and was a joy to read. I will miss this now I have finished.

I did enjoy this book, and I did find it fascinating the life of an American woman who then meets a rich man who then later down the line becomes president. But in between all of these cliched romantic notions are the little betrayals lies and indiscretions also doubts about self and the relationship. But I did feel it was too lengthy and I found the main character a bit off... occasionally I didn’t find her at all interesting or even sympathetic. It’s ok but not mind blowing and by the end of the book I kind of got bored.... it just was meh.

I would have given this book 5 stars, but the last section ruined it for me. I still really enjoyed most of the book. I ended up skimming most of the last part because it really lost my interest...too much political plot for me, and it was so noticeably inferior to the first 500 pages. It's more of a 3 1/2 star kind of rating. I would recommend it.
