Having become a genuine fan of Lindqvist's work, it brings me no pleasure to say that Little Star comes as a great disappointment. The story revolves around a young girl we come to know as Theres, whom at the beginning of the tale is a baby found left for dead in a plastic bag. Theres is discovered by an ex-pop singer called Lennart, who takes it on himself to raise the child in total isolation from what he perceives to be the corrupting influences of the outside world. Theres is a very strange child, not least for her (possibly) supernatural and superb singing voice. The opening to the book will be familiarly eerie to fans of Lindqvist, but despite the drama of Lennart's highly dysfunctional household and a bloodthirsty plot, Little Star consistently fails to evoke compelling elements of Lindqvist's previous writing. Indeed, even the haunting tone becomes frayed as the novel descends into an uninspired narrative that is reminiscent of a mediocre teen melodrama with some horror elements. The small cast of characters are a mixed bunch, but none are particularly compelling or rendered with a great deal of depth or sophistication. While the character of Theres promises a great deal, the book quickly loses its way, and ultimately fails to deliver a great deal more than boredom. It was a challenge to muster the interest to get to the rather ridiculous conclusion.

I really enjoy Lindqvist’s writing style. Little Star follows two young girls who are psychopaths. I found both of their storylines compelling and the background of each helps explain future events. Some horrifying moments in this one for sure, many of them involve a drill. Little Star is also a story about cult followers and what can happen when the right kind of words are used. In some ways the girls make me think of some very real life events. In particular the two young girls who sacrificed their friend to Slenderman, in order to save their family.

I absolutely LOVED this book and could not put it down. It's been forever since I've read a book in under 24 hours.

Not his best book, but some memorable moments and quotes.

It has taken me a very long time to finish this book, not because it's a bad book, but because it is so very good a creating tension and actual horror in me.

one of my favorite new writers

John Ajvide Lindqvist answers the question, "What would happen if a little girl was a mix of Rainman's Raymond Babbitt and Charles Manson?" The result is one of the best characters that Lindqvist has created since his two little killers in Let the Right One In. This story is entertainingly depressing as it follows the lives of two young girls, Theres and Theresa, as they try to figure out their place in society. I was a little hesitant to begin this book after Lindqvist's last two novels were slightly underwhelming, but he seems to be back on track with this one.
Gruesome, sad, and a goodread! 3 1/2 stars.

This novel started off great, albeit a bit bizarre. It ended less than that for me. Definitely worth the read, especially for mega fans of the author but it was a bit of a chore to finish the last part of the novel. Really interesting characters and huge potential in plot; just didn’t land/end that way for me.
