The best approach to this book is to read slowly and carefully. Hints and double meanings abound, and you’ll find treasures in the mundane passages if you pay attention. Truly a great work but not easily appreciated as a quick read.

A bit of a slow burn, but a great book. I loved seeing the varied POVs from around the Seven Kingdoms, and GRRM proves again that he is a master of character.

EDIT: I bumped it up to a five. Aside from Storm, this is the best character work I’ve read in a book. We get fantastic dialogue, inner voice, and POVs from cultures and characters we hardly ever see. The King’s Landing and Ironborn chapters were among my favs.

I don't know if perhaps I have simply grown past my love for the series or if this particular installment just fell really flat for me. It is probably a mix of both.
It is a much slower pace than I remember, with a lot more small expository moments than before (which was already quite a substantial number) and many of the POVs were not ones I found much interest in. It is an odd thing to be indifferent to a 900+ page book.

I will say that I don't really recommend the audio unless you just need it (like I did). I found the narration distracting, and while it is technically good it just didn't work for me.
