A friend said that this book is Penelope and Colin’s story on steroids which is an incredibly apt comparison

4.5 stars

I'm only taking off the half star for repeated use of "watery smile".

I enjoyed this quite a bit, but some elements kept it from being a higher-rated read for me. The hero had some alpha male tendencies that I didn't love (not that he was an alphahole overall, but there was more than one instance of him grabbing her or yelling at her where I was like CAN WE...NOT?) Also, you know how certain authors reuse the same turns of phrase and once you see it it's all you can think about? That's how I feel about Maclean's use of "ate/ate at her mouth" as a descriptor for kissing, and elsewhere the repeated use of "sweet rain" for [redacted]. Not sexy in the slightest, which is a shame, because I otherwise felt like the chemistry between the leads was good. But I think this is an older one of Maclean's, so I would read others of hers in the future.

Gosto da escrita da autora, diverte-me e é entretenimento garantido.
Gostei tanro da Calpurnia

This was honestly some of the most fun I've had with the Regency girls gone wild trope that Maclean is so fond of. I loved how caring and vivid the supporting cast was as well--both the families and some of the servants and tradespeople had a smidgen more recognition than they usually get.

I have read one of MacLean's books before and I did not really like it. However, THIS was excellent. I loved the premise of the book and how everything unfolded. I really like the idea that one has to take their life into their own hands for it to change. There is no fairy godmother, no knight in shining armor that will force you to change your life. Rather, it is through sheer determination and grit that you must develop the courage to chase after what you seek. It was refreshing to see this in Callie!

The romance unfolded quite nicely and was veryy steamy. Love that.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. MacLean obviously knows how to write romance, being a huge proponent of it and all. I think that some of her stories will stick with me and others....not so much. I am really happy to report that this is one I absolutely loved. YAY for historical romance! Though the writing style does get kinda cheesy at times...it was easy to cast aside and just enjoy the content.

It was a 5 star book when I read it the first time 7 years ago and it still holds up!

ahhhhh another new favourite, I loved this one so much
