I like reading books that were made into movies and I didn’t realize this was even a book. The book is very different than the movie so rather you loved the movie or didn’t like it you still may like the book.

I’m a huge fan of classic sci-fi, so I’m fairly used to sexism of misogyny and can typically move past it. But this author has a police detective complaining about how small a dead woman’s breasts were. He finds a person who’s been maimed and killed by a shark, and his literal first thought is how small and flat her breasts are. Absolutely not. Immediate dnf. Oh, and the detective had been reading a book that had gratuitous mentions of rape for literally no reason.

I just did not enjoy this book

Pros
- The first chapter
- the info about the town
- the science

Cons
- ELLEN- She fantasises about getting raped! WTH!
- all the other characters
- the pacing
- the animal cruelty
- the sexism
-the affair

Sometimes the movies are better than the books. Not often but that was definitely how this one went. I wish I never read this. I literally stopped reading and didn’t pick it up for days once I reached the rape fantasy part. Was she written to be hated? Because I couldn’t stand any of her. Is it because of the time period of when this was written? I don’t know how this became a book series.
