I guessed the twist early on but it was still such a good read!

The best part were the epilogue and the cover art. The first chapter was fine too.

I struggled most with the pacing of this book, in particular how fast the characters changed their opinion. I also found the romance to be unbelievable.
Overall, I just didn't care about anything that happened in the story... The twist weren't shocking, and I didn't care if people died or not... The thing is, there is nothing wrong with the story, but it's just not remarkable... there is nothing that catches my attention. With so many fantasy books available, I have no reason to continue with the series, unfortunately...

The writing was okay, but nothing that sticks with me for longer.
It’s marketed towards adults. However, some parts read very YA to me.

3.5⭐️

The writing in this book is so beautiful and lyrical but it took me so much brain power to understand the world and the intricacies of it that I didn’t enjoy myself as much as I have with other fantasy books in my collection.

That being said, I fell in love with all the main characters in godkiller and will absolutely be continuing the series! Now o understand the world and the plot I think I’ll really enjoy it. Do not be fooled by the length of this book, it takes a long time to read!

How? How does a book that doesn't even surpass the 300 page mark make me care about the characters within SO MUCH?! I would turn violent for all of our POV characters, I swear to god

A small book review today because ✨anxiety is kicking in✨. It’s one of these books that I bought because of its cover and I regret nothing.

Gods are not always the enemy; even your godkiller knows that. People make gods, and, for better or worse, gods make people. We show each other for what we truly are. Yearning beings, desperate for love, power, safety.

Into the lost city we go, on a pilgrimage for dead and forgotten gods, undertaking a perilous journey to unearth secrets and a quest to save ourselves. This was a rollicking, action-packed adventure from start to finish, fast-paced and fun from back to front, carried by a quartet of lovable characters, not quite heroes but not quite villains either - still entirely relatable, hilarious, and human. This is a world once inhabited by a hundred gods, and still scattered with their remnants, crackling with mystical mythology, and littered with the bones of old wars from a past that refuses to lie buried.

The gods are gone, and all that remains are their far-flung shrines, but trouble is stirring, and old powers are waking. When the arrival of a strange new god, a mysterious little girl, and a young king push our rambunctious quartet toward each other, they must make their way to the old city of gods, Blenraden, to find answers of their own. Along the way, Kissen, Elo, Inara and Skedi face danger and uncover deceit, fight for their lives, huddle by the fire, and learn to love each other.

Their found family chemistry will melt all the ice from your heart and make you feel all fuzzy inside as a begrudging connection begins to take shape between them and propels the story forward. We spend most of the book with them and no one else, allowing us to intimately learn who they all are. Their hopes and fears, all the things that weigh them down, all the words they swallow down. Each of them is distinct and well-fleshed out, made more endearing by their differences and bickering. I liked each of them from the start, and that love only blossomed as we barreled further into danger and disaster. They are allowed to be flawed and do the wrong thing; none of them is ever perfect, and it only adds to their realness. As much as I adored them, I was frequently screaming at their bone-headedness.

What happened to us does not define us, what we do next is what matters.

Despite the punchy pace and constant chaos, we are given plenty of time to breathe as we travel across the rich tapestry of this world's landscape, from city to village to mountain pass. It's a beautiful scope we peer into, and you feel all the wonder that this world has to offer. And like a weary travelling tourist who knows that when vacation ends, you have to go back to work, I did not once want it to end, for the frolics and the laughter to stop. Continuing down that path, this whole book just feels like a proper road trip, where you turn the radio's volume all the way up and stick your hand out the window to feel the breeze. The action was biting and sharp, scattered throughout like seeds. It always caught me by surprise when it popped up, often in unexpected places and circumstances. It's detailed and descriptive, and you feel every sword swing and blow of breath before going back to the adventure through the wild.

Now here's the part where I complain. Unfortunately, while the world itself was a wonder, the worldbuilding was a bit sparse. I feel like we never learnt much about the lore and the history of the different nations at all. Why are things the way they are? Why did any of this happen? Some answers we never got or even came close to. Hell, we never even strayed that close to most of them. The book keeps its secrets too close to the chest, and it was a little frustrating. It's very much to the book's detriment, but hopefully not the series as a whole. All the secrets that drive the story forward are never even revealed. There was far too much we did not know or never learned in the end.

Perhaps my main criticism was that there was a massive, driving focus on gods but not much on religion or faith. Both the story and the characters tackle belief and the power of gods, the love they desire, and the tragedy of their existence being snipped short because no one is worshipping them. But there doesn't seem to be much of a secular system in the land at all. What are their prayers? How did the gods being killed disrupt their everyday lives? There is irrefutable proof that gods exist, that they can become tangible and physically fight humans, and yet there doesn't seem to be that heavy a religious presence amongst people. I suppose everyone became used to it over time, and yet this remained an aspect that felt lacking.

You are worth more than you think. You are still alive; make something of it. Of life, not death.

The gods were alive, everyone knew, and then that connection was severed by one disastrous war, and the fallout seems to be curiously minimal. Society should have collapsed completely if these tangible, holy beings ceased to exist upon one man's order. The gods in this world seem more like lucky charms than creatures who are worshipped and beloved. Here's hoping this will be expanded more in the sequels, but it's a shame that none of this was touched upon much in Book 1.

The romance came and went. I forgot about it until I was reading my notes. I'm glad to say that I did not hate it, but it felt rushed and shoved in there, just for the characters to have something to do. Kissen and Elogast did have chemistry, and I was invested in their relationship, but far more time should have been spent on it before they randomly started smooching. It wasn't out of nowhere, but it did feel out of place.

Regardless of all of that, as a character-driven story enjoyer, this was a blast. It was like travelling around the world with a group of pals you quickly become attached to, and the lurking danger and desperate mission drove you all forward. Its flaws are easily overlooked in the face of the fun I had, a true adventure that I never wanted to end. The characters were so easy to love that I really had no choice but to; their close bond just so easily warmed my bones, and I cannot wait to see what they get up to next.
