I've been trying to broaden my reading horizons and read different things. This book was good, but I don't quite understand the over the top praise for it. My favorite character was Jumpin'. He was interesting and amazing. The story moved at a steady pace and the details were good. I'm not a huge poetry fan, so I'm sure some of the pretty words were lost on me. Overall, it was good.

This book didn't do it for me, maybe because it was an audiobook maybe because it was not my usual type of plot.

As with what seems generalised here in GR, this was also a book club selection. The only reason I finished the book, is because I really dislike leaving things unfinished.

Granted: it falls outside my comfort zone (sci fi, horror). But even still, I find myself enjoying quite often more "mature" or "classic" literature. This was not the case.

I found so many things wrong with the book, it's hard to mention them all. Starting with the writing, as a non English native myself, I found the author was trying too hard to write a book filled with aesthetic passages, over the top use of euphemisms which detracted me from enjoying the (simple) plot.

Speaking of plot, it just fell flat. To much suspension of belief needed to fully appreciate it. From the very beginning I couldn't overlook the fact that everyone one, and I mean every single member of that family left a 5 or 6 year old toddler by herself. At the hands of maniac drunk. Out of 4 or 5 family members who walked out, no one remember to take Kya with them.
A while town that simply does not care about a young girl of 6 living by herself.

Them we have the courtroom scenes and the "twisted ending" which completely contradicts everything else character wise we've read about the protagonist.

I get it the author was trying to portrait nature and the whole purpose of the book was to have a plot that somewhat mirrored nature. But in my opinion it just birthed a bore fest full of inconsistencies.

I feel this book was specifically designed for the reader willing to shed a tear or two, who enjoys stories with basic life philosophy and blindly follows recommendations from the herd.

But I guess this is common in a world that venerates things like "Twilight" and think it has a good love story...

I was loving this book until the final chapter. The prejudice everyone has against her is such a huge part of the book and the final chapter completely undid that. Also the fact she was the writer seemed shoe horned in and adds nothing to the book. Honestly dropped the book in sheer frustration at the final chapter. What was heading for a 5 star review but it is now lucky to get a 3 star. May just rip out chapter 57 if I ever go back to re read this!

3.5 ⭐️ Reading this book tested my patience. The characters and their "environment" were given too much time and attention just to emphasize their interconnectedness, provide a sense of what's happening, and make you guess what would happen next. I tried to understand the author's intention while keeping in mind that she is, in fact, a biologist.

It was initially a 3-star read for me, but I gave it that extra 0.5 because the last quarter had me on the edge of my seat, making the lengthy, drawn-out sections worth it.

Pick up this book if you need a break from modern-day settings or if you want to connect with nature and humanity in a way you might not expect.

Good book! If you love nature and dislike humans, you Will really love this book!
