Time speeds and bends around planets and suns, is different in the mountains than in the valleys, and is part of the same fabric as space, which curves and swells as does the sea.

Reading this on the heels of Tara Westlove’s Educated was difficult. Both feature young girls serially abused and abandoned by those tasked with loving her. Kya’s story is interesting and ultimately uplifting but made for a harrowing journey. She is resourceful, creative and intelligent despite being abandoned before the age of ten. The author has definitely romanticized this existence and I even envied her heroine at times regardless of her lonely existence.

3.5 stars for me!

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this book given some of the controversy about the author, but ignoring that here is my honest review!

The best part about this book was the descriptions of nature and the setting of the marsh. The environment was beautiful and unique. The plot itself was interesting yet somewhat predictable. Kya was a great protagonist and I loved reading about her character. Jodie was my favorite and he deserved the world. I am still suspicious of Tate. I didn’t love that original age gap when they first got together :/. Chase deserved everything he got. Jumpin’ and Mabel have my heart and I wish we got to know their characters a little bit better. An easy and enjoyable read.

It was really good up to the point where they revealed that the place the crawdads sang was Nebraska (objectively the worst state)
