This wasn't a bad book at all. It just took far too long to get going. It wasn't until right around the 60% mark or so that I began to get really invested. The writing was lovely, very descriptive and flowing, but the narration of Paul Ansdell is what really lifted this above a 3 star read for me.

IMPECIBLE narration! Very much felt like I was a character in the story and gave me the chills at all the right moments! BRAVO!

A quick, and spooky read true to the gothic horror tradition. I checked at least three times to verify that this was written in 1983, because it's hard to believe it wasn't written closer to the time it is set in. If anything, I wish it was longer - it was atmoshperic and genuinely creepy. Recommend to fans of the Haunting of Hill House, Rebecca, and Mexican Gothic.

A nice read for the spooky season even though I read it in December.
I’ve always loved the movie tbh. I’m very picky about horror movies but this one has been my favorite for ages. I just adore haunted houses and ghost stories, it’s simple. I’m glad I finally got to pick up the book as well because I had so much fun reading this and I liked seeing the differences between the two.
I think this was very well written, despite the long sentences at times, and I very much liked the main character.
In general the book is just a simple little ghost story with very eeries, chilling vibes. I simply loved it.
I loved the setting of the house in the marsh and the decription of the weather. It gave all the spooky vibes I was looking for.
The ending really sent chills down my spine, I did not expect that. I keep thinking about it still xD But yeh, loved this book! So happy I read this!
