I don't know what I expected from this book. I read it on a whim because I wanted something short and 'spoopy'. I had heard mixed reviews from my friends who had read it in school a few years ago, so I wasn't sure how I would feel. After reading it, I can say that I quite enjoyed, but was still a bit underwhelmed. Since I first watched the movie when it came out in 2012, I stupidly expected it to be a little scary, which it wasn't. Not much happened, in terms of the overall plot, but I found the general story fairly interesting. I also loved the overall creepy atmosphere. I understand the underlining meaning of the story, and about the manifestation of fears (I think), but because of my previous expectations of the book, I ended up not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. I still found it interesting however, and I'm glad I finally read it.

A pretty good, if relatively familiar, horror story. I wasn't too clued up on the book before reading it (I didn't know it was a play or a film) so going into it the story was completely fresh for me.
It's decently written and fairly engaging but, if I'm being totally honest, it's just average really. I would probably recommend it but not with serious enthusiasm.
I'm not a huge fan of the ending as it felt rushed and almost 'scary story you tell around a campfire' style with his child and wife dying. It wasn't very well foreshadowed and it felt tacked on to make it more spoooooky... It's a shame that my ending feeling was disappointment as, prior to this, it was alright, but c'est la vie. It's just a decent horror book that doesn't take too long to read.

This is the first ghost story that’s actually kept me on edge. There is so much tension in this book that it’s impossible to stay calm while reading it. Even in my warm house I was covered in goosebumps while reading.

Took me a while as I dipped in and out of this one. Listened to it on Audible- which has great effects that made the story more atmospheric.
The story line is quite different to the film which I didn’t mind as it meant I didn’t know what was happening but I did mind because….. I didn’t know what was happening. I read this thinking it wouldn’t be so bad as I already knew the plot….. I was very much surprised. Can you tell I’m not great with spooky, paranormal stories? While key parts are there, very different so don’t expect a carbon copy.

Good gothic horror book. It was quite frightening at times, however the ending was just a big mess and left me very unsatisfied.
