Excellent ghost story with heaps of atmosphere

A fantastically creepy story that feels like an old Gothic novel in both the story and the writing (although, obviously from it being less than 200 pages, it doesn't suffer from the wordiness of Victorian literature as much as it could). I'd seen the movie and thought it was great, so I wanted to read the source material and wasn't disappointed!

There's some differences in here, but I could see where a lot of the chilling scenes were lifted straight from here to appear in the movie. The tension was still all there for me, especially since I didn't really know how this version of the story was going to work itself out, and Hill really did a great job of ramping it up just to ease it a little...just to try and scare the crap out of me again. Of course, I brilliantly read the second half alone...at night...with cats that kept making a racket in the rest of the house to startle me. I don't normally get spooked by books or shows, but both the book and the movie in this case had me going.

A good read, and a quick one. It starts off a bit slow, but quickly turns into a great psychological horror.

This was a fun read! Found myself getting a little spooked.

Intense, scary and nightmarish, yet not a bit of gore. It is not really a cozy and it is not a modern horror although it was written in 1983. The style brings to mind 'The Lady in White' but it has the brevity of modern works. Despite all of that, the writing is seamless and the atmospherics are powerful. You may need to keep a light on for a few nights. One of the best ghost stories I've read in some time

Oh my this book scared the heck out of me! My heart is still racing ... !
