As much as I enjoyed this book, the ending was a big let down. The tension building throughout the book was absolutely wonderful, quite like Arthur I found my unease gradually growing, and was prepared for a big crescendo moment which, although I understand isn't needed for a good horror, felt like what the book had been building too the whole time. What happened instead was the haunting, other than a few explicit ghost sightings, remaining as something never more harmful than that of a strong draft blowing through the house, and even the ghosts stuck to what they had done on the first sighting, never truly escalating in violence or terror. The ending felt rather tagged on to what was otherwise a very cohesive and well-done story. However would still give it a read if your interested, as whatever let down came from the dull ending, was made up for by the dog, spider, who was nothing but a good boy the whole book and deserves all the love.

A good story, although, very sad. Not scary though
ooooh this was fun, i haven’t seen the daniel radcliffe film (scary movies terrify me) so i went into this with only a vague idea of what i was getting myself into. i looooved the setting and really appreciated the time spent describing the marshes, the sea mist and the house. i liked how we’re given a decent idea early on of what was coming and instead of making it feel predictable and less shocking, i felt a build up of tension as i waited for the string to snap.
definitely a solid spooky little ghost story to add some variety to my read list this year
