-strong and important themes that need to be addressed WAYYYY more frequently
-liked the concept of it
-not really fond of crime cases that are heavily based on religion; don’t find them interesting
-good plot and characters
-kept me guessing for most of the book
-the book ended a tiny bit abruptly but still enjoyed it

Really enjoyed this one! Could not stop listening! I think my one complaint was the reveal of who did the crime, but I can’t say much more without many spoilers.
This was an interesting read, that I enjoyed for the most part. The writing is really good and sucked me right in. Also the audio narrator was amazing. I did enjoy the mystery aspect of this and maybe I wasn't in the best head space while reading it but I thought the mystery could have been a bit stronger personally, but overall it was really well done and I think it came together well in the end.
I also liked the inclusion of commentary of living in a small Southern US town as a black person and how that was central to the story and of the mystery itself. I also liked the discussion of religion, particularly American Christianity, that happened where we see how it can bring comfort and community to people but can also be incredibly harmful and abusive and how people use it to justify horrible acts and bigotry. I am not religious myself but as a queer person I have seen the negative affects religion has had on people within my community but I have also seen how it can be comforting and spirituality and faith can be done without causing harm to others. I will also say I did know going into the book that in the first few chapters there is a shooting that happens at a school and as someone who has worked in education and worked in schools it was difficult to read.
There is also non-graphic explanations of harm that was done to children mostly in regards to the rape. There is also off-page child death, so they find the bodies. As someone who has worked with children and wants children of my own one day it was hard to read and was heartbreaking because it is a reality we live in. School shootings are so prevalent, kids go missing all the time and are often never found and is even worse for kids of color because they do not get the same media attention and care as their white counterparts, and that kids are sexually assaulted and beaten and abused.
This was a difficult read but really well done and done with tact and care. I really like S.A Cosby's writing and I am interested in potentially picking up more from him in the future.
