This is my first read for this author and I’m genuinely sad to say I was a bit disappointed. I will definitely read another work to see if this author’s strengths shine in other books.
What worked:
- Use of Titus’s mom’s words of wisdom throughout
- Marquis, Titus and Albert’s relationships
- Titus thinking through his moral obligations as a black cop, both in Charon and the FBI
- the historical backdrop of slavery in America and the continued presence of proud boys in our modern society
What didn’t work
- predictable plot, couldn’t really call this a thriller
- most characters beyond Titus were not fleshed out and quite flat ie: a con artist pastor
- I wanted more from the relationships of his deputies particularly Carla. Titus’s mentorship of her was kinda self serving we didn’t learn much about her
- the repetition of the haunting of Red DeCrain to Titus, when we finally learn the back story it was just like ok that’s it?
- Titus thinking like a know it all at times or playing into a self centered hero role. Felt like a corny movie
-The way Titus treats Darlene horribly and how quickly she just leaves him at 1 am, I felt this was unrealistic.
- unresolved plot points like Scott
I want more from this work I felt like it has a lot going for it from the premise but it just missed the mark for me. Will read more from this author however I’d like to understand the hype.

Overall I’ve enjoyed S. A. Cosby’s books. They aren’t books that have necessarily kept me on the edge of my seat. I’ve been able to easily put them down, not read in a couple days time, kind of books. But the story lines are full of info and ultimately they’re just good!
