Plucky fourteen-year-old boys with 'developing' morals who find themselves in sketchy situations—not a trope at all! Racism—not unique at all! Satirical social commentary—totally new! Sarcasm—not present in this review!!!

It's a holistic view of life along the Mississippi in that period. The poverty, lack of education and awareness, the cruelty and neglect of children, led by superstition and old wives' tales leading to people being easily conned over and over again. The tale told by a young boy who is the victim of an abusive alcoholic father who still retains his innocence and upbeat spirit and his compassion and cameraderie for a slave, Jim. Yes, the N word is very liberally used in the novel but that's because it was used very liberally by people at that time. The story does drag along quite a bit and I would have preferred not to have Tom in the picture, which is why I reduced my rating. The ending is pretty much a fairy story! Perhaps it's the ending Huck hopes for.
