This one creeps up on you like a jalapeño...there’s a slow burn. Wait for the ending. So worth it. Deep, metaphysically moving story about life masquerading in a flyfisherman’s story.
75% about many specific details of fly fishing. 15% about families enabling weak people. 10% about the author's self-sabotaging brother. Not bad but just not my topics of interest.
Excellent story of family and our attempts to understand those we love. Don't be daunted by the fly-fishing talk; I've never been, but it added a wonderful dimension to the story.
Two absolutely brilliant novellas, and one decent short story. The one everyone knows about is “A River Runs Through It,” and it does deserve its reputation. But no one talks about “USFS 1919: the Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky,” and I thought that one was at least as good—maybe better.
“It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us.”
I absolutely loved these stories, especially A River Runs Through It. It’s breathtaking. I knew I loved the film, but it’s been many years since I’ve seen it, so the story really felt fresh. All of the stories are pretty fantastic. I highly recommend this on audio. Superb narration.

My review only concerns the first novella.
There are a few books with memorable first lines, there are some books that have memorable last lines, and there are very few books in all of existence that have both.
This is one of those books.
All the lines in-between the two? Be ready to laugh, cry, and re-read passages again and again because of their impact and flow throughout the text.
I've specifically said nothing about the plot because this is something to go into as fresh as possible. (You'll want to fly fish when it's all said and done.)

I’ve never read so much about fishing and trees. Absolutely loved it. Would also recommend watching the movie (first) so you can fully appreciate Maclean’s love for Montana
why did he write 120 pages and about 5 of them were meaningful or memorable? if i ever have to hear about fly fishing again in my life it'll be too soon. tapped out after a river runs through it, not willing to subject myself to a short story about pimping or whatever.
