A friend recommended this. Maybe it would have been excellent but I just finished a slow book and I need something with a faster pace this time. I was bored by fishing very very quickly! Maybe I'll come try it again in the future.

Although hard to get through at times, this novel was really good. There were tears in my eyes at the end of A River Runs Through It so it must have been good! The way this novel is written, it's as if someone's grandfather were telling you stories of their life. This novel has stories that talk of the hardships of life in the goods old days and stories of events that unite families.
Exquisite writing. Wise. Humble. Beautifully phrased.

the prose is gnarled and not an example anyone should follow but. I finished this on the R train somewhere between court street and whitehall, under the east river. a strange and beautiful and heartachey book. i don't even know anything about fishing.

This story is so endearing. There's also something very special about reading a story and knowing exactly where every town and city is. I also live in Darby, and the man (John Faust) who is on the movie poster of the movie based on this book was also a Darbarian. I met him in the 90's when we first moved to Montana, and he was an absolutely wonderful person to talk to and fish with!
Not going to lie, every fishing aspect of this book confused the heck out of me. Stayed for the lessons on life, though, and was not disappointed. Many thanks to my school counselor for the recommendation!
