I liked the movie, and loved the book even more. The world would be a better place if more people read Norman Maclean's writing.

too many details about fishing that i don't really give a fuck about

Gave up half way through. I just don't get it at all.

A simple, beautiful story with perhaps the most lovely closing passage I've ever read.

“Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding.”

These short stories by Norman Maclean are told within the parameters of a single season. The stories are about fishing, logging, and the seasonal job of fighting fires. As the stories are told in first person it is sometimes hard to discern fact from fiction.

Read this along with the Close Reads Podcast and while I’m sure I did not get everything, I did enjoy this story of family relationships and exploring if we can really truly know those closest to us.

Too much fishing for me...
I stopped when the description of the umpteenth fishing hole was about to unravel...
