although i didn’t necessarily fall in love with the main character, i can say that this is a good read for anyone grappling with late stage capitalism and defining their value by their career. it has a pleasant level of absurdity, and leichter does such a wonderful job of playing with language and literary devices in this novel. i just wish i cared more about the main character.

This is a fairytale for grown ups. So fun while still hitting those emotional moments and critiquing late stage capitalism. Such a good book.

A curious magical realism novel about the anxiety of temp work that gets too caught up in its fiction to construct a coherent theme. There’s definitely something here about how living under capitalism puts you in a constant state of precariousness you are then left to try and outrun, but it’s muddied with this strange romantic notion of being middle class and eventually a girlboss at the end of the world. I like the whimsical prose but there’s only so many homophone jokes I can take before I’m dying for real character development.

Incredible writing style, absurdist and always surprising. Anyone who has done this sort of service level work can probably see something in the novel, although I am not experienced in temping enough I think to fully get it. Fascinating, dark yet lighthearted and bizarre.

Lighthearted but with an underlying sadness and feeling of emptiness. Leaning on the dystopia. Explores work themes in a world where a job is your only important identity. Temporary jobs but always in search of the one that'll stick. Whimsy, childlike/innocent narration, funny, heartbreaking. One of the best books I've ever read.

I really loved this book. It was so fun and also really sad and I related to it strongly as a young women kind of moving through life and work. It's a very quick read and we follow the unnamed narrator through her work. It's a really good and interesting and thought-provoking time.
