I was really prepared for all of the stories in this book to link up and if they do I didn’t see it. Though someone in my book club did say that they did so I will be looking for that on reread.
I didn’t understand how the stories were going to connect after ch 1 and 2 didn’t but 2 and 3 connected got me back on track. I feel like the nature of short story is the possibility of some stories not being the readers thing. I only found one story were I was confused and not caring which is impressive for how many their were.
My favorite interconnected set of stories story was the cabin mystery to learning what happened through letters was so interesting and I just liked what the truth of the mystery was in general. My favorite story overall was the man with the bird and his wife. That story was truly so touching and I very well might have cried. I also definitely cried at the last story and hearing what was happening during the first story and that love story.
I feel like almost every story in this book had an undertone of lose which is interesting. I will be rereading this book and giving it more time to really dive into the depths that I’m sure went over my head the first time.

Loved the concept of this book! In my opinion the stories got better as the book went on

New England is where I was born and raised, and still live, so I was drawn to this book because of the story settings. I kept reading this book because of the characters and the connections between the stories as there was a little mystery unfolding in each subsequent story. I absolutely loved each and every one of them separately, and the collection as a whole is my favorite kind of book. One that I won't be able to stop thinking about for days or weeks and will recommend to every book lover I know.

A good start to my reading year! I very much enjoyed this collection of twelve short stories, all taking place in New England at various time periods from the 1600's to present day. I enjoyed the hook-and-chain connection of the stories which cover a myriad of topics and unique characters. But each story was meaningful to me and made me think. In addition, the writing is beautiful.

"Now in my eighties, I know that most things we love are seeded before we are ten." (13) [The History of Sound]

"The only unpredictable parts of a life are what comes with war and bad health." (33) [Edwin Chase of Nantucket]

"I hated remembering that I raised my voice, sometimes, when she's leave the downstairs door wide open, or not feed the chickens, or leave the faucet running. I wondered how it was possible that I hadn't been happy every minute that she was herself, before all this. I missed cooking together, waking up and deciding which one of us would go downstairs to make tea, walking to the graveyard together, playing board games when the power was out and we couldn't watch television. Instead, on my walks alone, I wondered if my life would always be this narrow and difficult. . ." (212) [The Auk]

"This was his skill - knowing that there was an explanation for everything that appeared confusing, that it only needed an application of patience and observation." (288) [Origin Stories]
