A little novella that asks big questions about science and the desire to connect and the limitations of the human perspective. I do think this could have been either shorter or longer, and I didn’t love the tiny flashbacks at the very beginning (the flashbacks could have been cut altogether or just put in chronological order, they seemed ineffective the way they were included). The story was very compelling and expertly explored the ways in which the desire to know things, to forge new discoveries and hold them at an arms length in an attempt to be “objective”, can ultimately be destructive and exploitative. Kind of climate fiction, kind of horror-ish, altogether an interesting criticism of mankind’s desire to be included but ultimately “prevail” over all living things.

This is a hard book to rate and review. It's so reflective and it's a huge product of the first wave of the pandemic. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this book. It's well-written and so complex for what a short story it is.

So much to think about after finishing this book. A lot is covered in 112 pages, it’s wild.

Thoughts of intimacy, relationships, work relations, ethics, funding, ownership, societal gender structure, climate crisis, etc. How far is too far? Does that something owe you something in return? When and where do you choose to take a step back in life and just observe?

I look forward to reading more of Lee’s books. I just finished watching an interview Books Are Magic did with Lee and I just want to know more of what they are reading, researching, and writing.

Holy shit this is everything I want in speculative fiction. Terribly fucked up and gorgeously written. Tackling abuse and parasocial dependency in such a way I can only describe it as “emotionally gut-wrenching in a detached way” - it’s like reading a necropsy report without a clinical eye. Brilliant.

One of those rare “I thought the cover looked cool and now it’s a top contender of the year” books for me.

I will be thinking about this story for a long time. As with their first novel Summer Sons, the writing draws you in and doesn't let you go - truly visceral storytelling.
