I am not a huge fan of books with flashbacks and present day timelines but this one was done so flawlessly. The present day plot was compelling and the past plot wasn’t info-dumpy. After this, I’d love to continue reading books that have ONLY morally grey characters. All of the events took place over only like 10 days, which contributes to the fast-paced feel. I’m obsessed with the idea of ExtraOrdinaries and gaining powers based on the unique thoughts and experiences of your near death experience. Enjoyed it, can’t wait to read the sequel.

This was a solid book. I’m rounding up a bit because it kept my attention, but it didn’t totally pull me in. I really enjoyed that just about none of the characters were completely like-able - I find the quote at the beginning about there not being good and bad people (only bad and worse) to be much more realistic than most superhuman storylines. I enjoyed the twists and the ending was fun, but something about it just didn’t quite hit how I wanted it to.

I’ve heard about this book a lot but never got around to reading it until a day ago, but I’d finished it all in almost one sitting. This book was so engaging, and it kept me captivated in the characters and the story the whole time. I loved how the time jumps were handled, how both characters clearly had darker morals which fits the name of this series perfectly. It was a very contained story too, which I really liked, because it was easy to follow and was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Can’t wait to check out more of V.E. Schwab’s books!

yeah this was so easy to read and get invested in. sometimes is great to just have a fast paced book to get you out of a slump!
but also these characters are INSANE
