Started off like a decent, mysterious read, turned to a very graphic and violent story. I think it would’ve been better if the graphic violence was more eluded too than outright shown. And it’s rare that I say this, but I think it would’ve been beneficial to make the story longer before exploring the mystery behind Mr. Whitlock.

wtf was this awful shit.
brutal graphic rape, homophobia, and torture for what??? what was even the point?  i regret listening to this. only finished it because by the time it got to the most fucked up parts it was almost over. should’ve just dnfed or never picked it up to begin with.
and the fact that dude gets raped and tortured so violently but feels bad for the dude doing it to him??? and then everything is just fine and happy because he gets his memory wiped? wtaf.
why do men write about shit in this way? it’s disgusting. nothing “horror” about it it’s just weird trauma porn with delusional justification for it

if i could give this zero stars i would. from the very beginning i did not like this and then by the end i absolutely fucking hated it. what in the absolute fuck was this? genuinely, what in the absolute fuck? obvs literature n art are subjective, this is just my opinion, blah blah blah, but seriously. what the fuck.

none of the characters felt fleshed out and the plot was confusing and i’m still not sure what i read. i don’t even know if i could make sense of this book if i tried. and the storyline is riiiiiife with ableism, homophobia, sexism, all the works, in a way that feels like it’s trying to ~comment~ on those things but the commentary wasn’t truly anything of substance. mayhaps the commentary is that bad shit happens and there’s nothing you can do abt it? but if that’s the case there were so many better ways to have said that!

yes, this is a horror book. yes, horror gets a little grace for the concepts and ideas it deals with because they’re, well, horrifying. but when it’s just violence for violence’s sake it feels forced and cheap, dare i say. once again, was this trying to say that awful shit happens sometimes for no reason? cause if that’s the message, it was really badly executed

do not even get me started on the gang rape scene. why the FUCK was that followed by a scene where malik thinks abt how hot the rapist is and a sob story to make him (and me as the reader) feel bad for the rapist? are you shitting me? are you actually shitting me? just for malik’s memories of it all to be wiped!!!! so why have it as a plot point????? why make me read that???????

all in all i fucking hated this. i don’t know if ive ever read something i hated this much

This was alright. I think, for me, the biggest thing stopping it from being truly great is there is a huge disconnect in how the characters should be responding to certain situations. Moments of intense violence are preceded by a complete lack of understanding what characters may be getting themselves into. Complicated emotions over the loss of a loved one are followed up by elementary critiques of God and God's place in the universe. Scathing critiques of people only to willfully stay under their heel. All of this could be understood and conveyed better if given more time, but part of me also enjoyed that this was a quick romp. I think I would still like to check out his other books.
