I've only read a few of Eric LaRocca's short story collections and I absolutely loved them, so when I saw their novel go up for request, I was super excited to read it. As someone who almost exclusively reads via audiobooks, I can figure out very early if I'll like the narrator or not. I've listened to a few books narrated by André Santana before and I really enjoy his narrations! His voice felt right for these characters. But with all that being said, I didn't love this book as much as I've loved Eric's collections. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the overall plot, but ti wasn't as fast paced and action packed as I was expection. Even though all of the characters were behaving in ways that I would never, I really enjoyed seeing how they deal with the things they go through. I love Eric LaRocca's writing and that's really what saved this for me. I will always read anything Eric writes and I'm so excited to see what they write in the future.

Not my fav horror, not gonna lie. It had a really cool prologue, and then nothing was really expanded on too much... And then also a really cool god-like entity and ritual and culty vibes that were super cool, but they were kind of on the outskirts of the story. Very Magnus Archives but never the focus. Instead all we got were glimpses of it and all this (imo) character focus and side plot that was just not the interesting part. And I didn't like the gore parts of this, and normally I'm fine w gore? Idk, it was just kind of upsetting s/a gore and I didn't like it. I can now see what people mean when they say LaRocca's work is a hit or miss. But I did rly like You've Lost a Lot of Blood, so there's hope yet.
I am a huge fan of Eric LaRocca's books, and while I didn't think this was bad, it certainly didn't live up to his other stories.
This book has a classic Stephen King horror vibe, and there were quite a few parts that reminded me of Joe Hill's NOS4A2.
Which, while that certainly isn't a bad thing, it just lacked the originality and complete weirdness that his other books had. For me, this was any horror novel, nothing stood out and that was very surprising.

I picked up Everything the Darkness Eats because I recognized LaRocca's name and had heard good things. Unfortunately, I don't think their writing is for me. The writing contained so many similes and metaphors that took me out of the story and the characters didn't act how you'd expect real people to act. I read some other reviews and learned that there's an assault later in the book and I'm not in the mental headspace to deal with that right now.
Based on other reviewers' comments, it seems like if you already know that you enjoy LaRocca's work, Everything the Darkness Eats will probably work for you!

I keep giving LaRocca’s books a chance because ‘Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke’ made such an impact on me. I think about it every time I see raw meat. But with this book I learned my lesson, no more chances!
First red flag was the protagonist with the dead pregnant wife - couldn’t have rolled my eyes any harder. It’s a tired trope in media at large, but this author really loves a dead or dying spouse as character motivation. Yawn
There is nothing scary, atmospheric or tense about this. The antagonist is attempting to take over all of creation, but it everything seems so inconsequential? I don’t care for any of the characters. Malik’s whole plot is pointless and serves no purpose beyond torture porn. The only mercy is that it was short.
