dark fast-paced

This book was deliciously dark and left me mindboggled (in a good way!).
It’s a short story that is written beautifully, there are many parts to the book where I loved to re-read to just fully absorb the poetic beauty of it.

The story itself is well written with the two main protagonists being painfully human with all their beauties and flaws. It features a picturesque New England village where there have been a recent string of disappearances and a dark mysterious secret is slowly unraveling. One of the main characters has recently lost his wife and filled with self-hatred he is drawn into the flame of the mystery and finds himself getting a little too close for comfort.
The second protagonist is Malik, who is a gay man who has recently moved to his new home within this village, the village is not accepting of the same-sex marriage and they soon begin to experience severe hate crime. Malik is also a police officer who is dedicating his time to investigating the recent spur of disappearances and keeps coming up empty. Baffled by the lack of evidence and spurred on by the hate crime against his partner, he relies on the darkness within him to try and get revenge on those who harmed him and his husband.

The antagonist of the story is absolute perfection *chefs kiss*. He is an unassuming character whom has plans to unleash his power to the world, but he needs help for this. A mastermind of manipulation he uses this to greedily devour anyone and anything around him, but his purpose is so much greater than you suspect and I’ll leave that little treasure for you to find…

The only real downside to this story is the gang-rape element, I did not feel that it really appreciated how traumatic this event is for people who have been through this awful experience. Some parts that were written within this gang-rape and torture scene was distasteful and could be harmful to victims of this crime. I do not believe that the author had this intention whatsoever, however, I do feel that this part could do with some serious tweaking.

Overall, it’s a solid four stars for such an eerie but beautifully written horror story and with a few tweaks, it could be perfect.

I listened to this audiobook while traveling and I was glued!! It was so different from what I usually read. I had no idea what direction the book was going to go. It was short and easy to follow. The ending completely caught me off guard. Once I finished the book and let it digest I thought the ending was perfect.

3.5

I’m a bit conflicted on how to rate this to be honest!

I enjoyed the book, I thought the writing was good and liked the story. I think the ending was a bit rushed and I would have liked some further clarification and back story on Crowley and the spirit but it’s a novella that’s so be expected.

I also don’t understand why people hated the gore and brutality, it was part of the story and it’s horror. So I don’t really understand why people are mad about the book doing what it said it would. I also think it was necessary for the story and also happens in real life and so people should be writing about it making it known. If it makes you uncomfortable then good, it should.

I understand what people mean with the disability rep, it did seem a bit me before you. Disability is the end of everything, you can’t be happy, obviously anyone who is disabled should wanted to be “fixed”. I am disabled and it did rub me the wrong way but at the same time, if God asked me if I wanted to be healthy then yeah I’d go for it. So it’s conflicting.

I liked the characters, I adored Brett and Malik and really liked Ghost. I wish we knew more about Crowley and I’d love more information about the spirits.
