Reading the blurb, I was afraid this would be too much of a Sookie Stackhouse clone: young woman can read minds, except with this one very handsome man who turns out to be a vampire.

And it was just that. This young woman learns there is more in the world than people,
even more than vampires. She even is something special herself ánd is the saviour of all. That is new, compared to Sookie Stackhouse...

Emery and Rhys spiral into their relationship very, very fast. Like 0 to 100 in an evening. They have sex and all of a sudden Emery gets to cool him down when he's pissed, even without her demon mind control powers. That didn't seem very realistic, even for a romantasy novel.

I do enjoy a man with a potty mouth, so bonus points for that.

Not enough romance but still a fun read

Rhys & Emery: Not what I was expecting. But, I enjoyed it.

Don’t get me wrong… the story was good and kept my interest. I guess when I see this particular author, I thought this book would have more steam. This is based off her earlier works. I would guess this is one of her first books. The steam factor was set on LOW for this book. There was only one intimate scene and not enough sexual tension to sell this couple as a match made in heaven.

I liked Emery and her average “girl next door” personality. However, I wasn’t sold on Rhys and found him to be rather boring and bossy. The scene stealer for me were Rhys’ sidekicks, Kat and Dane. They bought way more personality than he did.

Good read but if you want spice and heat, choose one of her later books.

Happy reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed this vampire romance! Nikki writes very well and envelopes you in the fantasy world she creates. I am a huge fan of her Neverking series as well. I did feel like there wasn’t enough interaction before the protagonists became obsessed with each other. I wanted a bit more back and forth tension and more development of their relationship, but the story didn’t lend to that. I enjoyed the characterization she created for both Rhys and Emery and they each had pretty good development over a short book. For those wanting spice, there’s really only one main spicy scene…but Nikki delivers a delightful scene when it happens!

I do not know if there are to be more books with Rhys and Emery, but I would definitely read more! This book is a very quick and satisfying read; I look forward to my next Nikki St. Crowe novel!

Emery works for a land development company and her boss is on a mission to obtain a piece of land that a local billionaire, Rhys Roman, has been holding onto for years. But when she meets Rhys, he has other plans. Because he believes she might be the key to breaking a centuries-old curse that him and his Turned bloodline has been suffering from.

Nikki St. Crowe has recently become a favorite author of mine. I have literally read everything she’s written so far and this was the only book I hadn’t read from her yet. While reading the Wrath and Rain trilogy, I wished I would have read this first since Rhys, Emery, and other characters from this book appear in those. Because of reading those first, I also knew some surprises about Emery that I wouldn’t have if I had read this one first. Also the epilogue for this one sets up the beginning of Wrath and Rain too.

Now, I want to preface the rest of this review by saying that I have not been feeling great today. I’ve had a bad headache all day and so my thoughts on the book could be a little skewed. I didn’t love the book, but seeing as I’ve loved everything else from this author, it’s possible that it’s a me-and-not-the-book type of situation. Then again, this was Nikki St. Crowe’s first book so perhaps her writing has just improved since writing this one.

The actual writing style was good and flows easily. But the characters and story were just okay.

I didn’t particularly feel a connection or chemistry between Rhys and Emery. It’s one of those things we are TOLD is there, but I didn’t feel it.

As characters, they were just okay. Emery isn’t annoying, but she’s kind of bland. And nothing in particular stands out about Rhys. Honestly, Dane and even Kat had more of personalities than the two main characters.

I liked the story of the curse and thought this part was interesting. I did, however, not understand the ending. It seemed like a big loophole. So the witches are re-casting the curse to make it airborne, and somehow Emery TALKS the vampires out of falling into the curse through their minds. I don’t see how that would break a curse?

Overall it was a bit of a disappointment. I’m in a bit of a reading slump right now and was hoping a tried and true author of mine would be a winner, but unfortunately it wasn’t. ALL of her other books are amazing though and I highly recommend all of them, especially the Vicious Lost Boys series.

P.S. Other random pet peeve. Rhys is described as having dirty blond hair in the book, so it’s weird that the cover model has really dark hair.
