This entire series has taken a decided downhill turn. The first book was really good; the second and third were pretty decent...but this installment was so bleak, and Tania so impulsive and somewhat self-righteous, that i found it really hard to engage with the story. Tania irritated me to no end (I feel kind of sorry for Edric for being stuck in love with her, especially after his public attempt at a Define-The-Relationship moment didn't work so well), and after the first five pages or so, virtually nothing good happened in this book. People die, get deathly ill, estranged, trapped, banished, heartbroken...and it doesn't even all get wrapped up in the end - these cliffhangers are becoming abominable. The entire book felt like a cross between an unnecessary sequel to the original trilogy and a mess of really depressing groundwork for the next book. I'm hoping The Enchanted Quest provides a solid, satisfactory ending to the series, and that Tania straightens herself out by then.

If it weren't for the last few pages where we got new information, I don't know what I would have done with this review, to be honest. I liked the new lore, and I am curious to learn more about Faerie's past. That is my only reason for continuing this series (and because I'm almost done if we’re being fair).
I enjoyed Connor, but only sometimes. He was funny to read about because of his sarcasm (even if it was cringy occasionally) and I totally relate to him when he says thathe would be filthy rich and famous if he brought the knowledge about Faerie to the Mortal World. I mean, the dude got a point.
Rathina was probably the best character in the whole book, and I still don't like her. I feel that her redemption arc just flew over my head, so I don’t get her motivations. But after all she went through, she deserved so much better for carrying this whole book and plot on her back, okay?
But here comes my whining:
Firstly, I feel like I read some COVID-19 fanfic, and it was written in 2009, mind you. Frewin Jones saw the plague coming, and nobody knew.
Second of all, the main couple (Tania and Edric) were seriously off the rocket with stupidity and teenage behavior on this one. Tania was insufferable all around but with him?? Goodness, gracious...Except when she refused to marry him, I’ll give her that. But many other times I found that Edric was right, but he still behaved like a prick too. In the previous books he was all about “my home is where you are” and now is super loyal to a Lord that he never served… Yeah sure… I simply cannot root for them!
And since I'm on the romance topic, neither can I root for Connor and Tania. The man sees that she's heartbroken, and he's still all over her either way... Just no, get off her! I was really getting my hopes up for Connor and Rathina until he started flirting with her sister in the middle of that batshit situation... This love triangle is so forced...
Thirdly, I still wonder, once again, what goes on in Tania's head since telling Jade about Faerie is a big no-no, but bringing and imprisoning Connor in Faerie sounds totally fine. Make it make sense, but okay.
Oh God, and the time skip. I was so excited to see Tania's Earth parents going hysterical, and the author puts a time skip on me of three weeks where I miss their mental breakdown and the whole proposal between Cordelia and Bryn!!! I was so mad in the span of just 20 pages that it must have been a record.

Rereading a series I really liked when I was younger. Not as well written as I remembered, but I still love the story!

Rhia’s Review – So, book number 4. You’d think I’d be a little tired of it by now, but no. This 4th book begins kind of a new story arc. It’s really interesting to see sickness in the ‘Immortal Realm’ of Faerie, showing that no land is free from sickness and disease. This one really has a sense of suspense, given the ultimatums that are presented to Tania, and the end really left me wondering what the next course of action will be.
The Recommendation – Same as the others really; Faerie fans will probably love it. If you’re a fan of the series and were doubtful about the next one (I get nervous about continuing series, sometimes.) well don’t be! It’s well worth it.
