Took me a while to finish this book and Id never thought id give it five stars but the last 100 pages really, really got me. I could have never seen the ending coming and it made so emotional too. Great work! Hope its not the last thing we get to read from Neil Patrick Harris!
Also the Illustrations are perfect in every way.

Ridley is a favorite of mine for her fierce personality. This was a good read, but it didn't make me love her more, which I'd hoped it would. I enjoy how the series ended and think it's a great set of books for young readers. I loved the Kalagan plot twist!

Something about this being the fourth book just hit different. I really enjoyed this series from the perspective of an elementary student. For me personally, eh, it wasn’t written with a 30-something woman in mind so I always try to rate the book from the audience it’s intended. I loved through all the books: the diversity, the representation of a MC in a wheelchair, the magic tricks throughout the book and the Vernons: a gay couple who adopted Leila—WE DON’T SEE THIS ENOUGH IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. I’m here for more books like this. Every kid should be able to see themselves represented in a book and this is a great place to start. The ending made me tear up!

i personally felt the other books in this series were a bit stronger, but mainly because the focus character in this one is extremely unlikable. it did wrap up the series well, though, and i had a lot of fun reading them so i think someone in the target audience would probably be less critical.

A great ending to a really fun series!! I was SO excited for the reveal of the big bad that I think the final showdown was sort of anticlimactic for me. I loved all the discussion about keeping secrets and...how it came up later on? Not sure how to say it haha 😅

There were some really serious and grown-up things in here (especially toward the end) but the whole series has had a bit of that. I mean, we start with Carter basically living on the street, so harsh truths have always been around.

Speaking of harsh truths, ridley is...very much not my favorite, which is disappointing. I was hoping to come out of her pov book liking her more, but meh. I usually enjoy characters who are angry and speak their minds and get in trouble for honesty, because that's 100% me. But sometimes ridley just came off as flat out mean. And though I'm blunt and honest, I always try to see things from other perspectives, and ridley def doesn't. Idk, she just bothered me sometimes. But it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book! At least, I don't think it did.

I really liked the writing style too, especially how things were interjected, like after a particularly tense moment it was "whew that was emotional! How about another magic trick?" 😂 Just overall an incredibly entertaining series. I know magic is NPH's thing, but damn I wish he'd write some other middle grade books!! So good.
