Time To Hunt

Stephen Hunter

4.07 AVERAGE

Unlike authors of most fiction involving guns and shooting, Hunter knows and understsnds firearms, shooting, reloading, and all things associated. It's a pleasure to read someething where I don't find myself groaning about mistakes and confusion on the topic.

More back story - time in vietnam, his famous sniper attacks and sniper duel, pretty well told. I enjoyed the history part (inevitably sad, but well told). The modern day events were a bit of a stretch, plot wise.

This is an incredible story. It has a cast of intriguing characters, lots of tension, and some surprises.

Bob Lee Swagger just wants to be left alone. He's moved to his the family ranch with his wife and daughter, and he's grouchy a lot of the time. These days we'd call it PTSD. Bob Lee calls it the black dogs. They invade his mind and make him angry, make him want to drink even though he kicked the bottle after a long, hard battle.

This book is half in the past and half in the present. The first half tells the story of Donny Fenn, a solider who became Bob Lee's spotter in Vietnam and then died at the hands of a sniper who was specifically after Bob the Nailer. The second half tells the story of that sniper coming back to finish the job. Both stories are long, but well told. There's a lot of mystery and investigation. There's a good bit of action too.

Third book in the Bob Lee Swagger series. This one has a unique story construction, but gives a lot of history to the main character that was only alluded to in the previous two books. Like the first two, I churned through this one quickly.
