Starting the book on a train heading to a concentration camp was a gutsy move, and it doesn't let up from there.

This is a book that brings into startling relief the tragedy of the Holocaust, specifically what the Jewish population of Greece went through during the years of the Nazi regime. And what a book it is. It allows itself to handle the questions of when the truth is important, when you should tell it, and what the cost may be of either telling the truth or saying lies--though never in a way that feels overly preaching. And it deals with its subject matter as any book on the Holocaust should, with respect and dignity but also being unafraid to delve into the darker areas of that horrible time in human history.

I read this book in one sitting, admittedly. I couldn't look away from it--especially the ending, god, what an emotional rollercoaster. Highly recommended.

This book was one of the best books I’ve read in a while. 9.5/10. It’s a fictional book with lots of realistic history from WWII. It was so well told, coming from the perspective of the narrator, “the Truth”. The “Truth” tells the stories of four people who were all connected during the war. There is a strong emphasis on the importance of honesty and why humans try to avoid the truth.

The character development is outstanding. The emotions are very raw, this book will definitely make you feel things. It was very sad but also uplifting in some ways. This is the first time in a long time I can say that I really loved the ending. I thought the pacing was great. I looked up a lot of the historical pieces and it’s very accurate as well. I’m not surprised, as Mitch Albom has written many books I’ve loved - but this one might be my favourite. The only thing I didn’t LOVE was there was some slight confusion with some of the jumping between characters and their story lines, but he does tie it together very nicely at the end. It also seems a little bit far fetched in some areas but not completely impossible, but even the narrator acknowledges that.

I highly recommend this book, it was honestly so well done, filled with insight and spreading awareness, but will definitely get you in your heart strings so try to read it if you’re in a good space emotionally.
