This and the Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides I cannot recommend enough. I absolutely love mysteries, thrillers, psychological books etc but can struggle with finding one's that I can't solve or predict the ending early on. With both the books I've mentioned I haven't had that problem instead he masterfully plants breadcrumbs that lead you to several very possible conclusions before hitting you with an amazing jaw dropping ending. I also love the ways that he tied the two novels together weaving their stories as separate but still interconnected in ways. In some ways without the events that happen in this book we would not have some The Silent Patient as we now it. I truly can't wait to read The Fury by him next and any others he writes.

Why did I read this?!?! The author knows how to weave an incredible tale.

A really interesting thriller that incorporates Greek mythology and creates a compelling narrative. I was intrigued to know how this story would unfold, and while I was interested, I wasn't excited or eager to find out the ending. I felt that the ending was a bit obscure but it very much hit me and I wasn’t expecting it.

I did love the use of Greek mythology in it, especially the aspects with Persephone, but wished it played a bigger part near the end of the book.

I really liked the Silent Patient so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it fell flat. I kept reading, hoping that the twist would be good even with a slow pace. But the twist just ended up being weird :(

From start to finish, the story did not make much sense. The plot twist just added shock value, it did not tie nicely into the story line and there were absolutely no hints along the way alluding to the truth. The subplots ended up being inconsequential to the story as well (especially Henry’s….)and all the characters were one dimensional and shallow. The motifs and symbolism related to Greek mythology were not explored further in relation to the main plot of the story. Despite the book being called “The Maidens”, the story was hardly about those young girls and we never get to discover much about them and their dynamic away from the creepy professor. It feels like the author had a bunch of ideas he wanted to incorporate into the story and didn’t know how to connect all the dots. The connection to the characters from The Silent Patient was neat but that’s all it was, neat. Marianna as a main character was highly unlikable but not even in an interesting, thought provoking way. Her actions made no sense and she was incredibly impulsive, especially around threats. I don’t think that’s how women would behave in her situation at all, as it was quite foolish.
Not to mention that the very beginning of the story with her talking about how Edward is guilty and that is a fact, was misleading to say the least.
The book is marketed as murder mystery dark academia but it missed by a long shot.

Great twists just like The Silent Patient.
