Started July 25th, 2013.
This was bought cheap (with a discount) as an ebook, ok, I buy most of my books as an ebook, to save space.
It was on my "to-buy" list for a long time, and a few weeks or days before I saw the trailer for the upcoming film and when I got the discount coupon I compared prices. Sometimes even then a discount is applied, others are cheaper.
So I am looking forward to read one of the supposed classics of SF for the first time.
And probably later all other books in the series if this is as good as I hope it will be.
(The following was written after finishing the book.)

Strange that this is supposed to be a series, as this book and the story is epic and while the hero in the end is not old or dead, it feels finished.
Highly recommended.

The texts before the book explain the different ways this book appeals to people (or not, even that is mentioned). For instance quite a high price came from people who had been to boot-camp in preparation for war ( Iraq mostly). Although I read them first, I suggest to start with the book and only after finishing it, to read the thoughts about it.

I cannot say I am eager to read the other books in the series soon, I will let some time pass before I buy the next book. And maybe check a few ratings on Goodreads before, hopefully spoiler-free. This is a book to think about even after reading it and I feel that reading more in the series will disturb that for now.

This was actually the second time I've read this book. I read it in high school but didn't really remember too much about it. My book club decided to read it so that we could see the movie together and I was really excited.

I feel like when I read this book before I did not fully appreciate how great a book it was. I remember reading it and enjoying it, but now I wish I had payed a little more attention to all the complex issues in the story.

I don't really know what to say about this other than I liked it and I am really looking forward to discussing it in my book club! :)

Plus I am also tired so that could be a factor...

Just read this book! :)

I read this book for a science fiction class and would not have done so otherwise, as there is no way I would ever choose to support this author.

I'm also not going to rate the book because in this case I'm not really into separating art from artist. Objectively, I would have liked it a lot had I read it as a kid, but it's not worth recommending now given what I know about the author (as well as some misogynistic premises and casual racism in the novel)

A cut above most "young adult" sci-fi. I love the characters. I do wish I had never learned anything whatsoever about Orson Scott Card though...

4.5 stars.

Formative to my childhood; like Harry Potter, it is difficult to look back on it with unadulterated fondness, given how deeply disappointed I am with its author.
