I can't remember a book more inspiring or thought-provoking than this one. Becca Rothfeld's mind is indeed beautiful, and even though I sometimes found her to be over the top, I never ceased to consider whatever she wrote about in an entirely new light. She's a dedicated and gifted contrarian with an incredible roving intellect. I think my favorite essay in the book is the final one, "Our True Entertainment Was Arguing." One of those books I will order so I can read again. Genius.

It’s like reading a PhD thesis. Interesting points but the bibliography is longer than the book.

I feel like if I was smarter I would like this book more. I loved some essays (the opening one, the one on meditation, and the one on consent specifically), sometimes I wished that the author would simplify some of the topics a little bit/bring it out of metaphor a little. More because I am a little dumb than anything else. I thought she had a lot to say about excess and argued well against fiting ourself into neat easy to understand boxes. Maybe someday I will reread this book and be able to comprehend the bigger ideas, for now I will be content with what I did get; a compelling argument for being extra.
