Well written with an indulgence in sarcasm that I appreciate but I found some of her arguments to be disproportionately assertive compared to the superficiality and over generalization of some of her reasoning and only cursory acknowledgement that her sweeping claims only apply in a heterosexual context…which isn’t a crime, you can’t cover everything, but it’s just kind of boring to me. I can’t fully articulate what about this book rubbed me the wrong way, but the author covers some really compelling topics and their histories and makes big swings, even if she doesn’t sell me on her takes…kinda felt like she wrote about fragment fiction like maggie nelson’s bitter ex lol.  Worth the read though, gave me a lot to chew on and unpack in myself

this was one of those books that combined and critiqued all of my favorite cultural touch points. reading it felt like fate. becca rothfeld is so intelligent and it shines through in every essay. highly recommend reading digitally or, if physically, near a dictionary :)

Didn’t realize the majority of the book would be literary criticism. Learned many new words, but the structure was incredibly dense.

Too academic and critical. Preventing me from wanting to read

Not quite five stars because there are some very uneven pieces in here--the essay on meditation in particular felt like she was being willfully obtuse. Also I'm not sure I'm on the same page as her around sex and consent and its meanings, and ALSO I am confused as to why she doesn't have citations in this book. But overall, this essay collection sings. The first few essays in particular are absolutely cracking. I highly recommend it; even if you disagree with her, she gives you something to think about.

Really not what I expected, lots of philosophical stuff about various literature. Quite preachy and tbh not my cup of tea.
