I thought it had a very strange ending...

At times the transitions between eras--Schwartz's babyhood, his parents' early years, his current era of storytelling--these all were mixed up for me and not well enough separated. But I loved the funky art and the act of Schwartz's telling. This is an important graphic memoir and I'm glad we have it in our collection at Julian.

Overall enjoyed this memoir GN. The illustrations are striking and the story is important and worth sharing; however, I wish that the story had been fleshed out more, the conflict was a little more suspenseful, and the timeline hadn't jumped around so much.

It was an okay book. I think the author could have done so much more with the history of divided Germany and how it affected the people living there. I also felt the language was choppy- I know it was translated from German, but it could have flowed better. It was also confusing a few times going backwards and forwards in time without giving a date or making it really clear it was changing time periods. But since I have a soft side for Berlin, I'll give it a little credit.
