Started out slow but improved.

I liked the book, but the first 1/3 is super slow and I didn’t really feel like there was any real mystery/thriller aspects. The second 1/3 was quicker and started to get really suspenseful. The last 1/3 was very fast paced and was very exciting. The romantic piece was a little pointless, I mean I like a good romance in a mystery but it didn’t add anything to the story. I liked the ending.

Yet again a brilliantly composed novel by Megan Miranda! If you like YA and crime, this is definitely a must-read!

this audiobook review was prepared for and appears in AudioFile Magazine.

Narrator Erin Spencer adeptly conveys main character Jessa's mental state as she reminisces about her late ex-boyfriend, who died in an accident. As she packs the items in Caleb's bedroom at the request of his mother, each item reveals an aspect of Caleb that portrays him as drastically different from the boy Jessa thought she knew. Author Miranda's lyrical language translates seamlessly into the audio format, thanks to Spencer's compelling performance. As the story unfolds, Jessa gradually uncovers a mystery surrounding Caleb's accident. As Jessa becomes more desperate to know the truth of what happened, Spencer subtly quickens her pace and ratchets up the tension, leading to a satisfying conclusion.

This book started out extremely slow, and I had trouble falling into the story. The first half of the book is almost entirely Jessa cleaning her dead ex-boyfriend's room while having flashbacks of her memories with him. While I found the characters interesting enough, nothing fit into a cohesive narrative that built on each story. It felt more like a teen girl dealing with grief through memories, which can be a moving story, but this one felt too slow to be moving. I did not feel the more thriller vibes until about two-thirds into the book, as the mystery begins to be progressed. At that point, I began to feel invested in understanding what was happening. If I was rating the first half of the book, it would have probably gotten one star, but the second half would have gotten at least four to five stars. And I was very happy with the conclusion of the book, even if I did expect it to end that way.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

Her boyfriend dies...or disappears off a bridge, his Mother tells her she's moving and can't bear to clean out his room...because it's full of her. Each thing she cleans from his room triggers a memory of him and while it moves a little slowly at this point, it's how we learn the story of their relationship, both how it started; and how it ended. Through all the fragments of their past comes the real mystery...the why, the how and more...

A compelling listen with narration from someone I already know I like, I found this not only engaging...but filled with one secret after another secret...more like secrets begetting secrets, and twists that I didn't see coming and maybe didn't quite believe all the time...but overall not game-changing. This is my third book by Megan Miranda, I liked Come Find Me and didn't like The Perfect Stranger...so 2 out 3, ain't bad.

Solid and good writing for YA. A little longer than it needed to be.
