This was one of the most unhinged books I’ve ever read - it was smut with plot and at some points I will say, it dragged on sooooo much

I saw another review that basically said, the story sucked, the characters were bad, but I couldn't put it down. Same. It would have been a 2 star read for me (meaning I hate-finished it because I had to know how to ended), except I inexplicably and unfortunately want to read the next book so I gave it an extra half star.
The author basically gives away the whole plot in chapter 1, because the foreshadowing is awful. If you like being hit over the head by the obvious, you'll love it.
The FMC is insufferable, and constantly vacillates between "I am useless and worthless and no one will ever want me because I'm a poor loser" and "why shouldn't HE have to earn ME? I'm gorgeous." It's fucking weird and annoying and it never gets any better - hated her the whole way through.
MMC 1, Caspen, is honestly the fucking worst. I wanted to like him, since it seems clear from the jump that they are "meant for each other" but he's also insufferable. He's manipulative, he speaks in half-truths, he tells her to ask questions but then refuses to answer them completely (or at all, in some cases). He physically injures her several times, he keeps secrets, and he just... sucks. He's a walking red flag, and not in a hot morally grey way.
MMC 2, Leo, I liked in spite of this awful book. He's smart and funny and his bantering skills are excellent. I kept waiting for him to turn evil or something, because I actually liked him and was sure I would turn out to be wrong since everyone else in this book sucked. I really wanted a better outcome for him.
You will somehow make it out of this 500 page book without knowing what basilisks look like.
I wouldn't say that there's too much sex, but I will say it is somehow the boring-est sex I've ever read. Not one flicker of interest from me at any point.
I wouldn't recommend it, and I wouldn't re-read it.
