Pre - 3X Originally read September before reading The Shell Seekers. 2nd time reading, I didn't realize that Noel is Penelope from The Shell Seekers son. I didn't like Noel in The Shell Seekers, He's all ways out for himself. I vaguely remember him as just falling into a relationship in September because he was tired of dating. This time as I have just finished reading The Shell Seekers it will be interesting to see what I think.
3X Update Minor Spoilers - Having just read The Shell Seekers, I very much enjoyed the mentions of Penelope Keating in September. Especially Violet Aird reminiscing about meeting Penelope. As for Noel, he did have some character growth. But there was still a lot of selfishness and greed in him. He was more in love with the life style than Alexa. I'm reminded of something his sister Olivia said in The Shell Seekers. That Noel would end up married to some 'rich, well connected girl who would worship and adore him and to whom he would be consistently unfaithful. I honestly felt like he would have had an affair with Panadora if given the chance.
End of Spoilers
Still remains a 4 Star read for me. I mostly listened to audio Lottie is downright creepy. Henry was incredibly whiny. Wasn't particularly interested in that part of the story. Loved setting, party, Archie and Isabell storyline. Violet was my favorite. Spunky older ladies are my favorite things in Rosamunde Pilcher books.
2X Rereading along the Timeline. Actually begins in May.

1X Gentle read. Perfect choice to take along on my vacation to Scotland. Beautifully descriptive. Plucky older women characters. Bit dated in places.

Reading this Rosamunde Pilcher book transported me to the setting of this book - somewhere in Scotland mostly. Her descriptions of the area gave me a clear picture in my mind of the beauty surrounding this area. All of the characters became like friends to me as we followed them from May through September waiting for the big event to take place. There were several moments of surprise as the plot took unexpected twists, keeping me engaged the entire time. This was an excellent slow but steady read for me as I picked it up and put it down as time and other reading allowed.

Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars.
What kind of spoiled the book for me was the story line involving Virginia and Edmund. It seemed so unrealistic that Virginia would just all of a sudden stop being mad at Edmund about sending their young son to boarding school. They in no way resolved it, she just stopped being mad and he essentially patted her on the head and gave her jewelry as a reward. Then when he's not able to take Henry to the first day of boarding school she is furious again, has sex with another man, and decides to leave Edmund. THEN Henry runs back home and so Virginia decides not to abandon her marriage and everything is totally fine between her and her husband. I mean, what?! What kind of a relationship is this?
Also, I hated the old fashioned gender roles. Super lame.

At first I loved the book, the tone of it and the descriptions. It was a book that unfolded rather than rushed ahead and I liked that. Actually I liked that part all the way through to the end. What kind of spoiled the book for me was the story line involving Virginia and Edmund. 3.5 I am a huge Rosamund Pilcher fan and although her writing is just as good in this book as her others, it is my least favorite. I just couldn’t connect with the characters and I was actually confused with some of them. I loved her descriptions, just couldn’t get into this one.
Rosamunde Pilcher's characters all have such depth to them. I didn't realize this book was preceded by The Shell Keepers so I guess I'll read it next, wishing I'd read it first.
This book is set in a small village the Scottish highlands. It left me with a desire to visit Scotland.
