I genuinely cannot continue. Marius's commentary on young teens is too much for me to handle. It was already slow enough but now we have comments where he couldn't stop kissing her "baby woman skin" and "sensual and alluring as only young boys and girls can be." Bro, absolutely not.

what is the point of Thorne's existence? he's useless. and literally no one wants a whole book from marius' point of view. daniel was the best part they should've elaborated on him. marius is a total incel i do not care for him.

This book was way better than Pandora because it took advantage of the fact the character is a 2k year old vampire to give a sweeping tour through European (mostly Italian) history. One thing that I had never considered or just never been taught is the reason Christianity was so aggressive in it's spread is that it doesn't tolerate other religions, it considers itself to be the only correct one. Which is something that hadn't existed in the world till then. Rice also does a good job of reflecting how Christianity destroys other cultures and values and any sense of pleasure in the cult of Satanic vampires that rise up and remain until TVL. Anne Rice really shits on Christianity with some hot fuckin takes which is surprising considering this was published in 2001 and not much later after her husband dies she recovenverts, but it was probably out of grief of loosing her husband.

I wasn't sure if I would like this book bc I do not like Marius. And even though he tries to paint himself in a better light (so unreliably narrated, bestie) the hypocrisy that defines his character still comes through. He spends so much time lamenting the fall of Rome to invaders when, what was it Rome was known for again? He seems to despise religion, considers himself above that sort of thing, but worships and prays to Akasha. He constantly repeats to Thorne that anger is weakness and he seeks not to be angry but the moment someone even slightly contradicts him he explodes, often to just regret it later. He looses two ppl he considers to be the loves of his life, Pandora and Armand, through that. He almost made the same mistake with Bianca but at least he realized his mistake faster that time. But seriously he's 15 hundred years old at that point, you think he would have learned. I'm not saying I dislike the book bc of him, he's a complicated character, I don't seek books just to be entertained by characters who I agree with all their actions and feelings. I'm just saying if he spoke to me like he spoke to others I'd probably deck him.

Marius told Lestat that he deserved everything that ever happened to him but he must've been projecting because it's Marius who really deserved every bad thing that ever happened to him.
