This book took me a long time to finish, mostly because fantasy is not really my thing. I have to admit though that when I sat and read it straight through for long periods of time the plot had me hooked. It's so different from what I imagine a fantasy novel to be. This plot was rooted in real world situations just as much as the quest filled Western world. The characters were very interesting to read about and Odetta/Detta was a nice extra bit of conflict to add to the already frightening situation Roland found himself in with the doors and his sickness. The setting was very one note, but the lobster monsters added a half star purely for the fact that they were a genuine concern throughout due to the setting. I thought the writing left some things to be desired. I just don't enjoy how King writes Black characters. Either they use jive talk normally or he makes up a reason to have them speak like a stereotype. I just don't think it's necessary. And the use of the n word is so off-putting, I don't care whether it was normal to use it at the time or not. Lastly, I do think that it ended at a good stopping point, but it does leave me wondering if it actually needs to go on as a series as long as it does. I guess time will tell.

Final Rating- 3.5 out of 5 stars

I enjoyed the way this book creatively crosses through a mix of genres. It's too bad the recent movie adaption doesn't seem to have panned out. There's a lot of potential.

Brilliant.

The second chapter in The Dark Tower series is larger, bolder, and increasingly more poignant than what came before it. Picking up a mere seven hours after the events of The Gunslinger, King wastes no time throwing you head long into the action and terror of this world.

There's plenty here to love, and this felt more like a cohesive story than The Gunslinger, which was largely made up of flashback scenes. By the end, I couldn't put it down.

But the journey goes on, the Tower draws closer. My opinion has changed, but I know I've only just scratched the surface.
