jake and cleo. what the fuck!!! this was so good. such a lovely portrait of friendship in romance and two really unique characters. it felt like neither of them fit the typical archetypes deployed in regency romance, which was a nice change, a breath of fresh air.

In many ways, this book was very charming. The supporting characters were an absolute delightful, and I loved seeing what they were getting up to throughout the book. But this strength highlighted the book’s weakness for me: I did not find Cleo and Jake all that engaging. Their romance developed too quickly and lacked the charm found in the scenes at the Emporium, her grandfather’s house, etc. This is still a good book, but it wasn’t a five star read for me.

A lovely slow burn, regency romance!

Cleo is determined to be a wallflower when she makes her debut into society. But a bet with a rugged American makes that impossible. They start off as enemies waging a war over a business they both want but soon become friends and then lovers!

I loved the characters in this novel, everyone was a little bit eccentric in their own way. The vibrancy of their personalities flew off the page.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed that the main plot point seemed to be abandoned midway through the book. The bet that the main characters made just fizzles out and is not really spoken about after the halfway point.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and it was an easy read. I look forward to continuing the series.
